What are doing about the high turnover on sales people?

All of my customers tell me one of their biggest problems is turnover. Can anything be done or is this just a reality that can't be changed?

1. Pay them. Lets face it, $100 minis won't keep quality sales people.

2. Give them a small life. 60 to 80 hour work weeks aren't condusive to employee retention.

3. Treat your sales professionals as you wish to be treated.

I have been away for a while writing a new book for car sales. I wanted to comment because I too am asked why there is turnover. You can begin at the very top of your client list with the owner. It's ironic but there are still dealerships where it takes someone retiring before there is an opening. The reason these dealers have so much success with employee retention is because they make them part of the family. They are part of the team that builds the dealership to success. Many dealers work employees to the bone with long hours, no respect and sooner or later the employee leaves. It all starts at the top.

In many respects I also see poor communication and what is expected of a dealership employee. The initial interview can make or break an employee from leaving. What is expected and how they can be part of the team is very important. Too many times people in all departments of the dealership feel like they aren't appreciated for their contribution to the dealership. If you want more ideas on how your clients can build a successful team without turnover, I can send you the exact steps I was introduced to over 25 years ago. In 25 years of management I have only had one employee leave my staff (I fired them). Remember, it all starts with the dealer principal.
