Your Words are Your Tools for Mining Gold!

Hello fellow automobile dealers and salespeople!

My name is Don Vance, and I have spent 23 years in the automobile industry. It has been 7 years since "being in the trenches", but I still sell cars in my dreams? I want to emphasize that for a carpenter to be good, he needs good tools, but for a great carpenter, he needs great tools to be great.

Does this make sense? As an automobile dealer, for you, your words are tools. For excellent…

How Automotive Social Media Should Be

I can't tell you how often I look at new products that hit the market for automotive social media and think, "What are they trying to do?"

Sadly, there are so many choices out there that have zero relevance and even less effectiveness. It concerns me, not because of the competition around it, but simply because I sometimes fear that car dealers will be lead down a wrong path and end up giving up on social media as a viable form or marketing for their dealership.

At TK Carsites,…

Unfortanetly, We're Moderating Now

I can take the spam. It's easy to spot, so we don't have to put a ton of effort into moderating that part even if it sneaks on.

The decision has been made to moderate the posts on this network. The site was used recently to talk negatively about an individual. While there are plenty of venues to discuss opinions about vendors and individuals, this is not one of them. Using this network as a place to try to cast allegations towards someone can't happen.

I apologize both to Stan…

Another Website in a Box, Just add SEO

You've created a car dealer web site? Now what? Your effort is wasted if no one sees it. The best way to get your site noticed is to make it friendly to both of your audiences? Search engines as well as humans.

Last month I received an email from an Internet Manager in California. He was very upset that my car buying website, LotPro.com appeared above his for the their dealership's name on Google. Prior to sending a reply to him I examined his site. I…

Coverting Traffic from your Website to the Showroom

It's hard to believe that I've been driving for 10 years. This is understandably unimpressive in comparison to the experience many have behind the wheel. However I grew up in a time that things were quickly becoming more technological. Instead of riding my bicycle down my suburban block, I was playing the Oregon Trail on my computer. Instead of having friends over, I'd talk to them via Instant Message.

10 years ago, my father offered to assist me in getting my first car. We spent our Su…

Website SEO Checkup: Does your website have a dynamic XML sitemap?

A sitemap is how you tell search engines what pages are available for crawling on your website. A sitemap is an XML file that lists all the urls for your website.

However, sitemaps allow you to tell search engines specific pages you want spidered that they perhaps couldn't find otherwise. This is very important, especially if your website uses a lot of Flash, Silverlight, javascript, or frames. M…

2009 Year in Review at DealerRefresh

Wow, what a year!! No doubt a roller coaster ride for our industry. We hear about "the dealer down the road" closing their door just about every other day. The Business Development Center

Let's talk about the Business Development Center. In my opinion, auto dealers pioneered this concept but most of them fell flat on there face. Not for any other reason, but management personnel quickly realized that operating a marketing arm of a business was a completely different dynamic than operating a sales arm. So, rather than continue to improve on the management of these facilities in order to maximize the ROI in every department of the dealership they either quickly fell to the botto…

Android gets in the driver’s seat

In past articles in this series, we’ve talked about the emerging meme of phone-car convergence. It is difficult to predict what sorts of automobiles will emerge, or how innovative automobile companies are willing to be in this volatile economic climate, but as we study trends in the two seemingly distinct technology areas of automobiles and cellphones, it is becoming clear that cars are well on their way to becomin…

Lessons in changing consumer perception of a major brand, one tweet at time

Scott Monty heads up social media efforts for Ford Motor Company, an effort he began in July. In that role, he's responsible for internal and external adoption of social media strategy to help improve Ford's overall reputation. I sat down with Scott last month to discuss his approach, before what could only be categorized as an extremely active period for Scott.

We spent an hour discussing audience, tools, tone, content mix and etiquette. During our conversation, I was impressed by Sco…

How will the coming months effect your business??

Are you making the most of what you already do?

I think its safe to say, that as an industry, we are not going to sell more cars. If that's the case, how do we make sure that we get more than our share? Are there things we can do so we get more than our share or do we have to just take what the industry gives us? I think we can all agree, when the going gets tough, the dealers/salespeople that are on top of their game, get more than their fair share! What can…

Staffed Events Have Worn Out Their Welcome!

Has anyone had a staffed event sale lately that has lived up to the hype. I personally have been involved in two of these events over the past 4 months and they are about as reliable as the stock market.

You get the great sales pitch and the "Guarantee" but you still wind up spending a ton of money with minimal results.

I am really curious if anyone has had any luck whatsoever.
