98% of web surfers use search engines. In fact, you probably have one as your homepage. According to public traffic stats, Google is number one right now, followed by Yahoo!, MSN, and Ask.
You should be able to guess where I am going with this…
Search engine advertising has always been the best way to get visitors to your website; and always will be.
Why?
First of all, natural search engine traffic is free; and second of all, it’s a chance to give people what they are looking for. If you do it correctly, you will get much more targeted traffic than any advertising campaign can bring you.
I could tell you a hundred things that will help optimize your site- most of it you have probably heard before- but I won’t. Instead I am going to tell you something that you may not have heard: getting free search engine traffic is easier than you think.
It’s important to take a step back and remember the basics.
What you must know is that you are never going to fool the search engines. They use sophisticated algorithms to determine the relevancy of your site in regards to what is being searched for. You will always find someone tooting their horn about the next big way to get search engine traffic, but what worked yesterday may not work tomorrow.
The goal of the search engines is to provide users with the most relevant results of what they are searching for, and that should be your goal too. Instead of trying to optimize your site around the search engines, you need to optimize your site for the end-user and what they are searching for.
So what are people searching for?
The keywords will tell you everything. These “keywords” or “key-phrases” that people search for can give us a huge insight into what your market wants
The number one question in your mind right now should be:
How do I know what “keywords” or “key-phrases” people are searching for the most?
If you know the answer to that, you can then determine which keywords are the best to include in your site.
Here’s a hint: expecting to compete with other established sites in the most popular keyword searches is unrealistic.
