It's hard to believe that I've been driving for 10 years. This is understandably unimpressive in comparison to the experience many have behind the wheel. However I grew up in a time that things were quickly becoming more technological. Instead of riding my bicycle down my suburban block, I was playing the Oregon Trail on my computer. Instead of having friends over, I'd talk to them via Instant Message.
10 years ago, my father offered to assist me in getting my first car. We spent our Sunday going from dealership to dealership. I asked many questions about the various cars he showed me, but my number one question was "Can I drive it?" The answer was of course "No," but when I asked why, the answer didn't make sense to me at the time.
"We come on Sunday because car dealers are closed. There aren't any salesmen and we can shop in peace and privacy."
Being a young 15, I didn't quite comprehend why you wouldn't want a salesman to help you, especially when you have questions and want to buy a car. Despite my ignorance, we continued to surf dealerships, I chose a car and we returned the very next day to test drive and ultimately purchase the one that I chose.
Fast Forward 10 years. I am again in the market for a vehicle but I am armed with much more information than I was when I was still wet behind the ears. I've been through salesmen training, seminars and consulting specialists' programs. We're trained to ask leading questions, give choices and make the sale then and there. Even as I walked into my last job in a car dealership for my interview, I was approached by four salesmen assuming that I was there to buy a car. I instantly knew what my father was talking about nearly 10 years ago.
Customers still like shopping privately. They don't like to be hassled. Even now, one of my least favorite places to go is the local Foot Locker because I'm asked 25 times "Can I help you with something?" We have to put the trust in the consumer that they may not know exactly what they're looking for, but they have an idea.
